Rainbow Bridge services

*Please note these services are only available to existing FBVS clients*

Planning your pet’s end of life appointment is a deeply emotional and difficult decision. Understanding what to expect can help you prepare both mentally and logistically. At FBVS, we take steps to make this experience as peaceful as possible, with a few additional services curated by our Animal Death Doula.

1. Deciding When It’s Time

Consult with your veterinarian about your pet’s quality of life. You can tap here to go through our QOL assessment form.

Signs that euthanasia may be the kindest choice include chronic pain, loss of mobility, difficulty breathing, incontinence, or no longer enjoying food, play, or companionship.

2. Choosing a Location

On Site: We have a small quiet room (Pictured above) where staff can provide medical support and comfort during this difficult time.

In-Home Euthanasia: Home comfort vet offers in home services, allowing your pet to pass in a familiar, peaceful environment.

3. Preparing for the Appointment

Before your appointment, we encourage you to:

  • Do what they love activity wise, like visiting their favorite dog park or person etc if they are still able

  • Surround them with love and their favorite familiar items

  • Manage pain and Anxiety as needed (Speak to your Vet about meds that may be helpful prior to your appointment)

  • Decide who will be present: Some pet owners want to stay with their pet through the process, while others may find it too overwhelming. There is no right or wrong choice. There are various stages that you can choose to be present for. If you have further questions about this step, feel free to reach out to us.

  • When you are about to head to your appointment, ensure you have any treats you'd like to offer your pet, favorite blankets, toys etc

4. When you arrive:

  • You will be placed into the quiet room, and your Vet will come in and do once last exam on your pet. Our room is small, so please advise if you have a larger group coming

  • This is a good time to spend with your pet giving treats (even chocolate!), snuggles and lots of love.

5. The Euthanasia Process

  • Sedation (Determined by your vet): Many vets offer a sedative to help your pet relax before the final injection & catheter placement. During this IM injection, we suggest you offer them lots of love and treats to distract them.

  • Shortly after, most pets become quite sedated - We will then place a catheter. Once the placement is secure, you will be offered more time with your pet.

  • Euthanasia Injection: A further painless Sedative will be given IV, such as Alfax or Propophol. Followed by Dorminal, leading to a peaceful passing within moments.

  • Confirmation: The vet will listen for a heartbeat to confirm passing.

6. Aftercare for you and your pet after they cross the Rainbrow Bridge

  • Decide in advance whether you want cremation (private or communal), burial and if you would like some take home items we provide in clinic.

  •  If you choose - Our Animal Death Doula will come in and discuss our services we offer in clinic, such as paw prints, nose boops, ear prints, fur, flowers & stones for their send off and more. These services are reserved for exisiting clients of FBVS.

7. Coping with Grief

  • Allow Yourself to Grieve: The loss of a pet is significant, and it’s okay to feel deep emotions.

  • Seek Support: Talk to friends, family, or support groups who understand pet loss. One on Facebook we like is

  • Honor Their Memory: Consider a memorial, scrapbooking, planting a tree or placing a donation in your pet’s name.
